Royal Niestern Sander - Eemsborg

The Eemsborg is the first in a series of four multipurpose vessels to be built by Royal Niestern Sander. The vessel was delivered in 2009 to her owners Wagenborg.

Engineering of multipurpose vessels

The constructional design, workshop drawings of the complete hull, production information for the steel and part of the piping was all done by Vuyk Engineering Groningen. This first of a series of four vessels is to be followed by another two vessels which are to be lengthened versions of the original. VEG also performed the structural design and detail engineering for these vessels.

The vessels are regarded as setting the new standard for these types of ships for the next generation. As a direct result of intensive cooperation between yard and co-makers, since the very first design stage, these ships show very good characteristics with regard to economic performance and deadweight in relation to hold capacity. VEG was involved early in the design, assisting the yard in optimising the vessels design in relation to an optimum steel structure. A great deal of effort has gone into optimising steel weight and minimising the number of building parts, allowing the yard to build as cost effectively as possible.

One of the main contributors to the success on the project has been the choice for a 3D setup of the vessels main steel structure in Nupas-Cadmatic software by VEG. As a result, a detailed 3D model of hull and superstructure was available early in the whole process. This allowed the yard and other co-manufactures to accurately produce a 3D outfit version of this model, placing components, equipment and piping already in the design stage.

During the weekly engineering meetings, design items were discussed with both the yard and co-manufactures. Virtual “walk-rounds” were able to be made in the 3D E-browser model and conflicts between steel structure, piping and components were discussed and solutions were proposed. This interaction resulted in well considered early solutions for several critical design issues before progressing on to a next stage of engineering. Experience has clearly shown that, the earlier problems are solved in the process, the less costs are involved for both yard and co-manufacturers.

In 2010 the Eemsborg is nominated for the KNVTS Ship of the Year award.
